A state of mind is a mind-body state, like a specific software program that determines how we perceive and process information—and how we respond. A state of mind includes a set of particular emotions, memories, mental models, and behavioural patterns. A key element of Mentor Coaching is to help a client become aware of various states of mind, and self-regulate to focus on which state works best for what purpose.
When someone is in an emotional state they’re marooned in the right forebrain—the feeling, intuitive brain. The emotional brain hijacks the intellectual, logical brain and holds it hostage. With rumination or a negative thought loop, someone is marooned in the left forebrain.
The regulation of feelings and states of mind involves the understanding and mastery of access to a particular state of mind. For any situation, there are three components: state, strategy, and story.
State management is a most important aspect of optimum performance: to choose the mindset that matches a successful outcome. Strategy then moves beliefs to behaviour for successful performance. Story is the organizer of what we do – the theme and storylines. Most people start with strategy, but strategy is an evolved part of the process.
